Total cost for the class is $1200.00, this deposit will hold your place. The balance of $800 will be due at the time of the class.

Ancient Heirloom: Forging a Single Edged Sword

In this class we will be forging a single edged sword. You will have a choice between forging a single edged viking sword with a Peterson Type H pommel, or a medieval falchion of the Elmslie Type 3c.

This class will present many challenges regardless of your experience. Your best chance of success is to take each step slowly and methodically. Rushing through the steps in order to keep up with others will result in missing out on the nuance of each of the processes we will be going through. Taking good notes is a must! Demonstrations will happen on schedule, whether you are caught up or not. This is to make sure I can at least get all the important information into your brain, even if your hands cannot keep up with the progression of the class.

It is expected that students will be doing some amount of finish work at home. The plan is to have all the work done that needs specialty power tools and forging equipment done before the end of class. I wish I could guarantee that, but every student works at their own pace, and every sword presents its own challenges.

This is a 5 day class. Running from 8am till 5pm with an hour break for lunch.

Skills to Practice

Students will see the most success if they are capable of the following skills.

1. Forging a 12 inch long taper in a ⅜ square bar while leaving minimal hammer marks

2. Straightening ⅛ x 1 x 24 flat bar

3. Using a 2 x 72 grinder for making knives

If you are able to practice before the class these are the skills you should brush up on. If you do not yet have your own shop, this may not be the time to take a class like this.
